2nd Birthday - George Pig and Mr Dinosaur

Seeing as the little one was still totally obsessed with Mr Dinosaur and very little else, we stayed with the theme and went for George Pig with Mr Dinosaur. This was essentially a combination of his cake from the previous year, and his big sister's Peppa Pig from the year before that.

I also tried making Cake Pops for the first time - they were a success, although very fidgety!

The birthday boy!

4th Birthday - Ben & Holly's Castle

This was my first major cake sculpture. An experienced cake-making friend said to use rice krispie square mix to make the wall, so I took her advice:

I wanted a rainbow cake for the castle. I now know that I would have been better to make the castle with intermittent cake boards and supports but I was lucky this time and it didn't collapse!

I ordered the Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom castle and stole the figures out of it. I kept that present back from her until after her party, so she didn't notice the missing people!

There were actual squeals of joy and delight from the children when we cut the cake open to reveal the rainbow layers - worth every minute of the crazy-late night!

And after her party was finished we let her open her last present and play with the little figures from the cake!

7th Birthday - Tom & Jerry

This cake was a special request from my son; he specifically asked for the scene in Tom & Jerry where they go ice skating in the kitchen. It was a bit of a disaster - the fridge started to collapse over night so it needed a quick recovery in the morning with some chopsticks to prop it up! He loved it though and we managed to save it for long enough that he saw it as it was meant to be!
I had a friend make the figures as I was no good with fondant. The fridge is a layer cake with different colours of buttercream icing - in retrospect I should have put some weight supports under it, on top of the other cake!

The piñata was Tom, of course!

As his party was on a different day to his birthday itself, we had another small cake at home for the family. I ordered the topper on eBay and made my first true rainbow cake!

1st Birthday - Mr Dinosaur from Peppa Pig

My littlest was subjected to Peppa Pig because of my daughter's infatuation, but he loved George Pig and Mr Dinosaur made him giggle! We bought him a Mr Dinosaur toy for one of his birthday presents, which soon became a firm favourite!

We had a family party for his birthday but I still made some cupcakes with buttercream icing and then fondant dinosaurs on top.

And his cake was a simple rectangular cake cut to dinosaur shape; details made from rolling icing.

3rd Birthday - Peppa Pig!

My daughter LOVED Peppa Pig, so this was an easy choice! We had the normal themed tableware but otherwise didn't do anything themed other than the cake - she was over the moon, however! It was a simple rectangular cake just cut to shape with a template I printed from Google Images, and iced with buttercream. I used rolling icing for the details.

6th Birthday - Football!

This party was a very simple theme - he wanted Football so we just bought a few themed decorations and tableware. His cake was as simple as could be; I borrowed the goals and football from a game in his bedroom and he was delighted with it!

The piñata was just a football but, rather appropriately, the string broke after a few turns so they had to kick it around the room until it broke open! :)

2nd Birthday - Very Hungry Caterpillar

For my daughter's 2nd Birthday we did the Very Hungry Caterpillar theme.
We bought a few of the themed items - the best buy was the wee ice cream tubs, which were a perfect size bowl for little hands to hold and fill with their snacks of choice!

The cake was a genius idea - I made two plain sponges, and swirled in some green food colouring before cooking. I cut half of one cake into a head shape and iced with red buttercream icing, and used sweets for the eyes and antennae. The rest of the cakes I cut into wedge shaped slices and simply arranged them in the shape of a caterpillar, and surrounded the cake with different berries and fruits.

This meant that the toddlers could just help themselves to whatever they wanted straight off of the tray - much more convenient! Also, interestingly - the cake disappeared quickly, and the fruit disappeared quickly, but the icing-and-sweetie covered head remained until last!

5th Birthday - Mr Men!

This was my first real attempt at a themed birthday party. He wanted Mr Men, and Mr Tickle was by far the favourite. I was delighted with this cake; it was the first shaped cake I had ever made, other than a ladybug - at the time, this seemed like a very difficult task but actually it was just a dome cake, iced with orange buttercream, with the arms, legs, teeth & hat made out of rolling icing!
Needless to say, he loved it!

The piñata, of course, had to be Mr Bump! We didn't get a good photo of him before he was attacked, though! Poor Mr Bump!
